The Black Box Boutique

The Black Box Boutique

When you walk into the The Black Box Boutique you really do feel like you`re walking into a little jewellery box! Having opened just four months ago, bloggers and fashionistas from all over the city have been drooling over the hand selected brands by owner, Lilla Balint, such as ToyWatch, Vita Fede, Noir and also Canadian brands such as Liel and Lentz and her own in-house exclusive line, LB. Recognized for her distinctive selections, these lines have been crafted in places as far-flung as Israel, India, France and more! Just this past October, pieces from The BBB were shown off during World Mastercard Fashion Week in Toronto by writers for Stylicity on behalf of fashion week.

This 2nd floor walk-up in Yorkville offers a great range in prices starting at $40 upwards to $500.  There is something in here for Continue reading

Labels or Love: Consign Toronto

Labels or Love: Consign Toronto

We all know the famous single by Fergie for the Sex and the City movie and is it ever true! Everyone has their favourite labels or designers and they love putting together wish lists for if we could afford everything we ever wanted. Trying to shop for the best in designer goods, while still staying on budget can be very difficult. More and more people are opening up boutiques selling the best in pre-owned authentic designer apparel, shoes, bags and more. Their growing popularity is spreading and I’ve had the chance to hear from store owner, Dag Larsen, who opened up his own consignment boutique just over six months ago. We sit and chat about the ups and, well, more ups than downs, about buying pre-loved goodies.

Mijana: Your store is BOOMING! What made you decide to open up a consignment boutique?
Dag: Seeing so many clients with great pieces in their wardrobe that had been worn once and now a thing of a past really made me see how clothing has so much life in it. A beautiful gown for one woman that she wore once may not Continue reading

Caitlin Power Interview

Calgary native, Caitlin Power has been recognized for redefining women’s wear through classic tailoring, architectural details and sharp silhouettes. As a graduate from the Fashion Design Program at Lethbridge College, Power established her self-titled contemporary line in 2008. Since then, she has featured her collection at Western Canada Fashion Week and Toronto Fashion Week. Her work has been shown in Elle, Flare and FASHION and who wouldn’t want to talk about this edgy designer whose trade mark material has been, my personal favourite, LEATHER! After just finishing up the final touches for her Spring/Summer collection, Caitlin sat down with me to talk about everything – well – Caitlin Power!

Mijana: The Caitlin Power line is known for its architectural influences. What were your first influences when you started designing?
Caitlin: I’ve always been inspired by architecture, but when I started design, it was mainly men’s tailoring.
The SS13 collection was inspired by light.  How it reacts with different objects, absorbed by some and reflected by others.  There’s also certain power that comes from light, and finding a perfect balance between light and dark.

The FW13 collection that I’m working on now is inspired by my recent trip to London and Paris.  One building in particular caught my eye, The Louvre and the Pyramid.  I was drawn to the mix of ancient and modern architecture acting as one.

M: You just finished up Toronto’s World Mastercard Fashion Week in October – what do you enjoy most of doing fashion shows?
C: I love the feeling of accomplishment after Continue reading

Show Me Your WANG

Show Me Your WANG

Not even 3o  and he is spreading his talents all over by the nano-second!

Alexander Wang, known for his hip sportswear label, has been assigned as the new creative director for Balenciaga. The New York based designer will now spread his wings into the high fashion world of Paris. After fifteen years as its creative director, Nicolas Ghesquière has stepped down and the avant-garde line will now be in the hands of the young Wang. The fashion house’s president and chief executive has described Wang having a “cosmopolitan vision of design” which will compliment Balenciaga’s futuristic and high fashion elegance. Having won many prestigious awards, including the CFDA 2009 award for Women’s Designer of the Year, as well as being adored by so many in the fashion world such as model and very closed friend, Erin Wasson, I think it’s safe to say that Balenciaga is in very good hands.
